Monster Magnet use the phrase “retro-future” to describe the sound on their latest album, Last Patrol. Makes perfect sense. The New Jersey natives sound retro without being too predictable, modern-sounding without being far-fetched. There is an essential balance in the band’s orbit. For instance, a song called “Paradise” has a steady hypnotic dream rhythm to it, while the title track builds up to a stormy, unique psychedelic burst, blending both ’60s and millennia aesthetics.

What seems to be a career pattern, vocalist Dave Wyndorf is also the centerpiece of the sound. He conducts the creativity with a creepy, well-oiled voice — never wavering, powering on, and forever in command — both monsterish and magnetic.
